From primeval landscape to nature and bird paradise
On the border of the provinces of Limburg and North Brabant lies National Park De Groote Peel. A vast, water-rich, and quiet raised bog area. It is one of the few places in the Netherlands where raised bog still occurs. And thus, a region full of history. Once, you would find an untouched marsh here. Now the landscape consists of water, heathlands, sand ridges, forests, shrubs, and small and large water bodies. A heavenly paradise for nature and especially bird lovers. Hikers also thoroughly enjoy it here. So lace up your hiking boots and let paths, towers, and plank bridges guide you through this once impenetrable marshland.
Turf extraction shapes the landscape
In the mid-nineteenth century, the large-scale extraction of peat as fuel, also known as turf, began. Canals and waterways were dug for the drainage and transport of the turf. Individuals also extracted turf, which they transported with carts via these special 'peat paths'. Every farmer dug turf on their own or annually leased piece of land. This resulted in peat pits (one-day pits) of various sizes and shapes. The 'scars' of this turf extraction provide De Groote Peel National Park with a historical dimension and have introduced variety into the landscape. The large water bodies, the small peat pits, the peat paths, and waterways showcase the visible history of turf extraction. Dive into the past and search for the hidden fens yourself.
Wetland for birds with international allure
Due to the combination of abundant water, vastness, and tranquility, the area acts as a magnet for birds. For this reason, De Groote Peel National Park is an internationally recognized 'wetland'. Nearly a hundred bird species breed there, and countless migratory birds settle there for longer or shorter periods in spring and autumn. In the open areas, many marsh, heath, and water birds such as the little grebe, black-necked grebe, bittern, Eurasian teal, garganey, marsh harrier, water rail, nightjar, bluethroat, and whinchat can be found. So definitely pack binoculars in your bag!
One with nature
This beautiful original high moor swamp of 1,410 hectares is not crossed by roads, high voltage lines, or other infrastructural works. This is very rare in modern times. You feel one with nature, away from the modern fast-paced world.
