You walk over boardwalks, the border between Limburg and Brabant, and along paths that were created during the early peat extraction. Around you, you see vast and open marshes, farmland, and meadow birds. Listen to the singing bluethroat in spring, marvel at the colors of the rare butterfly, the Large Chequered Skipper, and be amazed by the many birds of the nature reserve.

The Night Watch of the Peel

The route also takes you past the Meerbaansblaak, also known as the Night Watch of the Peel. Here you can see everything the area has to offer. The expansiveness, the water, and the many birds. The water reflects the Dutch skies and treats you to a different view with each visit. In the summer, various dragonflies fly above and around the water. With a bit of luck, you may discover the large chequered skipper, a butterfly with striking white spots that can only be found in the Peel due to the moist to wet thickets and very damp grasslands.

Growing and Blooming Spring

In the spring, breeding birds like the curlew and little grebe settle down. The sundew blooms, and bog cotton and cotton grass cover the fields with their white fluff. The bluethroat sings its beautiful song, and on the boardwalks, you can hear the moor frogs popping.

Accessible all year round

The Mussenbaan route of approximately 6 kilometers can be walked at your own pace and is accessible all year round. This is also possible during the breeding season and bird migration, when a large part of the area is closed off to provide rest for birds and other animals. The route starts from Buitencentrum De Pelen. You just have to follow the blue posts.
