Looking out above the treetops? And enjoying a magnificent view over Drents-Friese Wold National Park and the three Northern provinces? Then head to the highest point in Friesland: the Bosberg near Appelscha! A 20-meter-high sand dune. Here stands the iconic Bosbergtoren, no less than 33 meters tall. The tower is built on a massive underground oak over 300 years old. The tops of this ancient tree are still visible, the rest lies hidden underground.

A pine trunk with 3 landings

Frans Beune, the designer of the tower, was inspired by the green surroundings of Appelscha. The result; a design that resembles a gigantic pine trunk. The three viewing platforms resemble branches from a distance. Because the tower is made of brown Corten steel, it blends beautifully with the colors in the natural environment.

Rise to great heights with kilometers of view

The lower floors just peek above the treetops. On the top floor, you can look down through the glass floor from several viewing platforms, making it extra thrilling to step onto them. Of course, you can also stay "safely" inside the tower. From this height, on a clear day, you can see cities like Leeuwarden, Groningen, and Coevorden in the distance. The signs on the top floor point out the landmarks in the far surroundings.

Parking is free at the parking lot at Bosberg 2 in Appelscha. From there, it's a few minutes' walk to the Bosberg Tower. A climb costs 2.50 euros. In the summer, you can climb the tower from 10:00 to 18:00. In the winter, from 9:00 to 17:00. Good to know: there is an elevator in the lookout tower. There is also a wheelchair-accessible entrance.

After climbing comes strolling

If you've seen the Drents-Friese Wold National Park from above, you'll surely want to experience the area from the ground as well. Various hiking routes start from the parking lot. For example, the Bosberg Hiking Route through the forest. This route is completely paved and therefore suitable for people with strollers or a wheelchair. Or would you prefer the Westeres Hiking Route through the countryside? One of the most beautiful routes goes through an area with heathland and sand dunes. This Kale Duinen Hiking Route starts just past the Bosberg Tower.

Would you rather explore the area by mountain bike? One of the most beautiful MTB routes in Friesland starts under the tower.
