The National Parks Bureau and Wandelnet will be working together in 2026 on a series of monthly walking blogs about our national parks. Wandelnet visits each park and in this way showcases the many walking possibilities, nature, and stories of the area. This month, National Park Oosterschelde is in the spotlight.
The Oosterschelde is a popular place for recreation on the water, but there is also much to experience on the shore. Along the dikes and through the hinterland, there are plenty of walking options, with the water and nature always close by.
Walking between water and land
National Park Oosterschelde is the largest national park in the Netherlands, with 37,000 hectares, and consists mostly of water. It is the transition between water and land that makes the area special. Along the dikes and in the hinterland, there are plenty of walking opportunities.
Oosterschelde Path
An important route is the Oosterschelde Path, a regional path of 256 kilometers divided into 16 stages. The route leads through Zeeland villages and polders, the Delta Works, and bird-rich areas. Wind, weather, and tides ensure that the landscape is constantly changing.
During Wandelnet's visit, a shorter walk over the dike on Noord-Beveland was also made. Along the way, the tidal nature, an oyster pit, and an old agricultural harbor could be seen. The walk shows how nature, landscape, and recreation come together in National Park Oosterschelde.
