In the coming months, the route of the Pieterpad in the national parks Drentsche Aa, Sallandse Heuvelrug, and De Maasduinen will be made accessible for wheelchairs. Initiator Moving Beyond Limits is collaborating with the national parks.
The mission of Moving Beyond Limits (a group of passion-driven care and travel professionals) is an inclusive outdoor world where nature and adventure are freely accessible to the 1.4 million Dutch people with a physical disability.
Expedition Pieterpad
With the Expedition Pieterpad, the organization is working on making the longest and most famous hiking trail in the Netherlands wheelchair accessible. The hiking trail is over 500 kilometers from Pieterburen to St. Pietersberg. Along the way, hikers cross three national parks, namely Drentsche Aa, Sallandse Heuvelrug, and De Maasduinen. With these national parks, land management organizations, route agencies, and other involved parties, the challenges on the route are being explored. Afterwards, the parties are looking for feasible solutions for the accessibility for wheelchair users.
Accessibility and Inclusivity
The aim is to have the wheelchair-accessible version of the Pieterpad realized by May 30, 2026. A wonderfully beautiful objective. This can also serve as a catalyst for greater attention to accessibility and inclusivity of nature in the Netherlands in general and the national parks in particular.
