On Saturday, October 17, 2026, water is the focus in the national parks. During National Boot Day, visitors discover the importance of clean and sufficient water for people and nature. From searching for water creatures and muddy walks to experiments about water and climate: there is plenty to experience for young and old.

Months without rain or huge downpours: due to climate change, we are increasingly dealing with more extreme weather. Too much, too little, or polluted water affects nature and the plants and animals that depend on it. During Boot Day, the national parks show the role water plays in the landscape and how we can work together on sustainable water management.

From water creatures to wet boot trips

In National Park De Biesbosch, visitors can join a whisper boat tour and take a walk through the special freshwater tidal nature. In National Park De Meinweg, participants go in search of small water animals with nets during Ditch Day. And in National Park Drentsche Aa, children can discover water creatures, participate in interactive activities, and see who can make the highest splashes in a puddle.

There is also much to discover in other parks. In National Park Dwingelderveld there are water experiments, and visitors can contemplate climate dilemmas during a walk or bike ride. In National Park Lauwersmeer, Gnome Day revolves around the question of how gnomes keep their feet dry during long dry periods and heavy downpours. And in National Park Oosterschelde, visitors discover the unique landscape of creeks, salt marshes, and mudflats during a wet boot trip.

You can also make a difference at home

Boot Day shows that water management is not only for nature managers and water experts. You can also contribute to sufficient and clean water at home. Collect rainwater in a rain barrel, replace tiles with greenery, and allow rainwater to soak into the ground. This helps to reduce waterlogging and at the same time provides more room for plants and animals.
