National Park Zuid-Kennemerland, together with the municipality of Velsen in IJmuiden, organized the Grote Plantdag in the Zee- en Duinwijk. On April 18, nearly 100 residents participated in greening their gardens and streets. In total, nearly 200 m² of tiles were replaced with greenery, contributing to biodiversity, climate adaptation, and water retention in the neighborhood.

Removing tiles and greening gardens

Residents received approximately 100 dune garden plant packages and were advised on removing tiles and creating a climate-resistant garden. The dune garden plants used, such as lady's mantle, rough hawkbit, and ragged robin, naturally occur in and around National Park Zuid-Kennemerland. They provide more biodiversity, greater habitat for birds and insects, cooling during warm days, and better drainage of rainwater. Thus, they contribute to a climate-resistant and green neighborhood in IJmuiden. Additionally, this action connects residents with each other.

Green and sustainable neighborhood development

The Grote Plantdag is part of the municipality of Velsen's action plan for a green and climate-adaptive Zee- en Duinwijk. By combining plant packages, education, and resident participation, greening is made accessible and work is done towards a more sustainable living environment. The initiative shows how collaboration between residents, the municipality, and National Park Zuid-Kennemerland contributes to structural neighborhood greening in IJmuiden.
