This year, a Hiking blog will be published monthly on the Wandelnet site about one of the 21 national parks. The hiking blog for April is about Kalmthoutse Heide National Park. This park is partly in the Netherlands and partly in Belgium. The variety of landscapes in the park is large. The northern part in the Netherlands consists of a secluded landscape with forests, sand dunes, and fens. The southern part in Belgium is characterized by open landscapes, expansive heathlands, and more relief.
Grenspark Kalmthoutse Heide has 28 marked hiking trails, ranging from 1.7 km to 24 km. The editor of Wandelnet takes a route from the Sustainability Education Centre De Vroente in Kalmthout. Along the way, he passes the large fen Putse Moer and one of the many impact craters from V1 rockets from the Second World War. These impact craters are much deeper than the fens and attract special species, such as the crested newt. The natterjack toad, smooth snake, and moor frog are also special species in the Kalmthoutse Heide.
