Grab your backpack and binoculars, lace up your hiking boots or hop on your bike. Then you'll be all set for a multi-day trek through the nature of the Wadden Sea area. You'll cross not one, but two national parks. In total, you will cover almost 100 kilometers through Lauwersmeer National Park and Schiermonnikoog National Park. Both parks are inextricably linked by the landscape and the story 'Salt as Heritage'.

Best visited: during bird migration in spring and fall.

Traveling with Hilko

During the trek, you follow the journey of Hilko, a young man searching for the stories of his ancestors. Like previous generations, Hilko works at the fish market, a place where fish is sold. He questions his calling. Is this where he is supposed to be? The doubt is intensified by nightmares that leave him with an uneasy feeling. Where do these nightmares come from? Follow Hilko on your journey through the two national parks where he seeks the meaning of his dreams.

Experience the magic of Lauwersmeer National Park

First, you explore the surroundings of the Lauwersmeer by bike. In this bird paradise on a former sea bed, beautiful nature and endless vistas alternate. And as you move further away from the sea, you enter increasingly older land full of cultural history. Learn about fishing through the centuries in Zoutkamp and visit the Fishing Museum. After the loop around the lake, you return to the mudflats. A piece of nature that continues to enchant people, with its ever-moving water, its constantly changing skies, colors and moods, its scents and sounds, birds and ships.

Discover the impressive character of Schiermonnikoog National Park

Next, the boat takes you from the port of Lauwersoog to the Wadden Island of Schiermonnikoog. The island was shaped by strong sea currents, strong winds, and drifting sand. The nature here is still constantly in motion. You experience this best by walking through Schiermonnikoog National Park. Bring your binoculars for the beautiful views over the mudflats, and to spot special birds or a sunbathing seal on one of the sandbanks off the coast.
